hello christian.

in english, this expression means "my best guess is that it is the kind of hat mostly used by the GJ in the pre-war years." but someone - an advanced GJ collector - told me in a private message: officer piping for the b'muetze did not come until 1942 or even '43.

by '43, I would guess most "short bill" mountain caps would be quite sweaty and worn out, and that officers and men alike would be looking around for a replacement - like maybe an ordinary and easy-to-get M43 type that they could sew an edelweiss onto.

a few questions to experts:
-when did production of the unique short-bill model cease?
-was it made alongside the M43 in anything other than small numbers?
-and if so, why?

I would think in a war economy, the germans would consider co-production of different caps for a time-and-money waster.

That's why I didn't get it. I also think this is a later design.

yes, very intelligent use of space. you should consider designing museum exhibits.
