No one has called anyone a fool here.Your question is very legitimate and maybe some of the more active members haven't had a chance to log on this Father's day weekend. So I will offer my humble answer. The "Black " is a very very dark blue.It really is almost indistinguishable from the color of an SS visor.Often the interior becomes the easier tell because the Bahnschutz caps are generally manufactured by and marked by the company's that have been graciously posted by the members here. This is one of the reasons that many SS collectors pay a premium for standard interiors. It often avoids the possibility of rebadging. It is a minefield that requires close hands on inspection.Hope that this provides some help
      Best Regards

CLE, Paul is right--this is a very busy weekend, and I just saw your post.
There are 3 types of BzP headgear--the deep blue (used up until 1940); the pale blue (which came out in 1941) and then the more field gray (late war) caps. It used to be in the 60s, 70s and 80s unscrupulous sellers would simply remove the BzP insignia, and replace it with SS, and voila, an SS-Generals cap (that is why it is hard to find Officer's caps to this day.) The easy give-away is the pasteboard and velvet, which will have stitch marks where the insigina used to be. Some have had the velvet and pasteboard replaced, but the fakers still leave tells--see NTZ's pinned thread above.

          thanks

Thanks for taking the time to give me this information. I am allways learning. I've been interested in visors for 30 years [since I was in my teens] and have owned many. Just got my first WSS NCO visor!

          Thanks, Cliff

Found in a NH estate buy this last Friday...Bahnschutzpolizie (at least I think thats what it is!) visor, early, dark blue, a bit misshapen...came with an SS officer visor...ugh. Still, its a super hat.

Notime--nice one--you scored a nice Alkero with the rarely-seen wool strip on the outside of the sweatband....

                Cool...thanks!

I did notice the unusual wool edge to the SB, and have not seen this before. And you are even aware of the maker! Thats cool. This came with an SS officer cap that I posted in the SS forum a while back, a Luft 1937 tunic with drop wing eagle sewn so low that the flap will not unbutton, an M42 helmet with no insignia on it but otherwise complete and some armband type stuff. Not a bad day...the first SS cap I have had from a house and the 2nd Bahnschutzpolizei, the first was years ago, the later lighter blue overseas cap. I must admit that I did not know about the early color until I researched the hat and it led me to the forum. I belonged to it but had not been on in a year!

How good are these hats? Do they sell well? THX in advance.

Here is the only known pic of a Direktor's hat in wear that I am aware of.

IMHO, the gray ones (like Paul's above) were for BzP, while the blue ones were for DRB.

I believe there was one on an auction site recently. Then, there was always my old fake one, but I've never seen one with more than 1 crappy photo.

This one has Kurt and me stumped. Could be an unreferenced late-war change in BzP regs, but who knows (note the lack of a velvet band, and that it appears Heer green):
