    Really strange "M43"

I don't know if this is a photo distortion(don't look like it) but if this hat looks like this in real life, is one of the most strange shapes I have ever seen.

The geberal in the photo is even using a field/combat tunic with all the general rank insignia, something that is not that rare...but with that hat peak

Could this be one of the axis allies traditional headgear desing?

Actually it's a private purchase Army General's Bergmütze/M43 being worn by General Dietl. Most likely he had it custom tailor made.

You know, I think he was a smaller guy and come to think of it, I don't remember other Gebirgs Generals wearing such exaggerated bergmützen. I think he was able to see the future of the Soviet's large military visor caps and wanted to be on the cutting edge.

          ...

On the photo it's not General Dietl, but some other Gebirgs General. And that cap is really funny looking.

It is not unusual that private tailored caps were 'out of shape'.

          Here's Lothar Rendulic in one:

Also, here's a thread of Dietl's uniform in Helsinki:

well, this peak is also high...

He was in fact hoping to get a leading part in the sequel to the movie "The Great Dictator" Having seen the original staring Charlie Chapman he realised that to have a chance every thing had to be over-sized esp. for a general.

Now just imagine what we would all say if that one got posted for opinions on the forum ???

Great photo, war time variations are an underated collecting area in their own right,

I agree on the fact that it's not Generaloberst Dietl on the above photo. Nevertheless, Dietl himself wasn't the last one with weird caps either.

Looks to be a standard Bergmutze in which he added a visor hat chincord.
