        I'd be suspicious, likewise, of a crusher that has a maker logo, but no signs of ever having had a plastic diamond. What leads you to believe that those without one are more the exception rather than more the rule?

          Scott, just the amount of caps that I've had pass (unfortunately) through my hands! Most had the diamond and the others showed evidence of the diamond having been removed.
          Cap makers especially back then wanted their products 'showcased' and the only way to accomplish that was to place an 'ad' in the product itself. Additionally, hair oils were vastly used and the diamond served a duel purpose.
          Now, if the old noggin was thinning or bare that sharp piece of cello could be a problem...

            Sounds logical, what you say...sweat bands could also be marked. My experience tends to be the opposite and many of the earliest I have seen never had a diamond. But at best this seems to run about 60%-40%. As well, I tend to believe the preponderance of forged caps err on the side of diamonds and maker's labels. In any case, anyone who finds an authentic example of this style cap...regardless of the points we are discussing... has found a wonderful and scarce piece of headgear.
