    Weird storage damage?

Well the chinstrap is still there but seems to have melted on and apart?? But other than that and the damage it caused to the felt, this seems to be in pretty good shape.

To me, it looks like whatever caused the chinstrap to break is the culprit for the damage. The whiteish areas look like where the chinstrap buckles were. The chinstrap is broken pretty close to where the abrasion is on the left of the cap. Maybe it was stored tightly packed and the abrasions were caused by close quarters with other caps. Looks quite normal to me. Just poor storage possibly. Mike.

The hat itself seems to be in almost perfect condition.

The only damaged thing ig the chin strap and you can probably get an replacement.

It's amazing how much heat these black leather chinstraps absorb, black peaks as well and start to melt them. Look how the heat has effected the paint on the underside of this one. Sitting in line of direct sunlight for a few years will do it no problem.
Years ago my Dad bought a matching pair of beautiful flintlock pistols. He put them on display on the bookshelf. One was a lot nearer the window than the other. After only about 5 years, the wood on the pistol next to the window was about 3 shades lighter than the other and they didn't match anymore!

My suggestion would be to take some luke warm water with some woolite or similar wool cleaner in it and dip a soft toothbrush into it. Gently rub the toothbrush over the effected part of the centre band, don't soak the wool, be sparing with the water. The stuck on bits of leather should start to loosen enough for you to take them off and the chinstrap impression will come out as well.

              Just noticed that some of
the peak stitching has been poorly repaired in the past as well. It would be worth re-doing this properly.
