To me, it's not "crap" or "a bad one", but simply a newer reproduction, sold through numerous vendors. It takes less than 30 seconds for most people who frequent this forum to identify it as such.
A relatively small number of people can now afford the real versions of these. So, I am glad that good reproductions are manufactured. I have about 8 of them in different pipings that I could never afford the real version of.
Many new and uninformed collectors will be fooled by these and that's unfortunate, but this forum has gone a long way in reducing these frauds.
A cavalry one, my favorite. A double Erel without the paper tag - easily identifiable as a modern reproduction.
Its actually an older repro, when they were using black and white labels instead of the color they now use. I first recall seeing them in the 80's.
We have to distinguish a repro from a fake--a repro is originally made as such, and becomes a fake only when the seller attempts to pass it off as real. (And of course, there are the hats that are made to be sold and passed off as the real thing--these are fakes from the get-go.) These were (and are) sold initially as repros, but often become fakes on Ebay.
I have no problem with them personally--I would hope that anyone who is serious about the hobby could spot them by just a picture. They do serve a purpose, whether for the reenactor, or as a filler (as DC points out.) Too bad they are all not this easy to spot (but then again, we wouldn't have as much to talk about.... )
