    Goring Headgear

Rather than attach this to the prior post of Goring ephemera from our favorite underware purveyor,I thought it would be a little more dignified to start a new thread of Goring material.m-43

Paul, thanks, once again, for another example of the "rarest of the rare". Was this the one "The Fat One" was wearing when he surrendered?

          Hi Chris
Thanks. This is not the one he was wearing when he surrendered. This is an earlier cap.

            Paul,

If you have this in hand, which I assume you do, could you give a description of the piping material? Possibly using a loop if it is NOT real bullion piping. Perhaps it is, but it has a shiny quality that looks like it might be a man made material that does not tarnish and is not cold to the touch. Thanks,

            Richard

To be honest, Paul, this is the first piece of headgear you've posted that I don't like. Of course I could be wrong, but this one doesn't look right to me at all...

                Hello!

If this item is Original (I give in: I can not tell from this pictures) , it can also "just" be a generals cap (also rare of course).

Maybe you can post pictures from the lining etc.?

                Thanks

                  Hi Guys
Appreciate the comments.Normally I don't post interior shots on the rare stuff(although I will email them to members that I know)because I am afraid that it will help the fakers produce a higher quality repro. However, this is such an extraodinarily made cap that I will have interior shots taken and posted.I think that when you see the detail and quality, you will feel the same way that I did about it.
I had the hat at the MAX and it seemed to pass the in hand inspection test with flying colors.
Per your request,Richard, the piping is the exact same bullion material as the eagle, which is embroidered directly into the hat.I think I understand what you are referring to,and perhaps the patina from age(or maybe just my lousy photography) makes it look like that glitzy stuff that they use on high level fakes. It isn't. It is cold to the touch.
                  Best Regards
                  Paul

I had the privilege of holding this hat in hand, the quality is what one would expect! It's quite large and the interior wear is spot on. I'm certainly not an expert on Goring hats but I absolutely felt it was the real thing.

                      Paul,

Thanks for the answer. I am trying to find out if there are some artificial gold non-metallic types of piping actually used in the period. I have seen plenty of the silver officers type and would like to know if they did it in gold also?

As promised, here is a closeup of the piping. The cap itself is a really fine brushed wool.

                            Paul,

Thanks very much for posting the close-up of the piping. It appears to be a very loose weave gold metallic mesh over a cotton or some other cloth core? Maybe you can tell better in person. Very interesting stuff, love the direct embroidered eagle...nice touch. That actually adds another type of piping into the mix. Thanks again for sharing,

                            Richard

                              Hi Richard
Thanks again for your comments. Is the crown piping along this cap what you were looking for.It is a cello but has a much more coarse finish in an attempt to "appear" metallic. It is not cold to the touch but has a roughness to the texture that you don't generally see on cello.
Let me know if you would like more detailed pictures
