    Nick,
The example of the army infantry you showed seems to prove that the hat is a saddle with a the spring still installed. It makes sense. However, I always viewed Hausers hat as a teller, but I see your point.

Peter, you pick hat 4 as the Loser?

I said this before on the old "guess the maker" thread and opined that Hausser's was a pre-war Pekuro. They aren't Teller form, but their Sattel isn't as pronounced on their later wartime models, especially with the cap spring in place (which is built-in to the piping.)

In Mark Yerger's "Waffen-SS Commanders", Volume 1, the chapter on Hausser has numerous pictures of him as a Gruppenfuhrer with the pre-April 1942 rank tabs - including a better image of the picture shown in post #93. The Yerger images show Hausser wearing what seems to be this same cap in variety of side shots - and it is not a teller. See pages 250 and 251 in particular...

Why do I feel like I am playing chess? I will try to examine the hat more closely this week end, if possible.

Peter why didn’t you defend this cap when we were laughing about it on Dr. Ron’s site a few months back? I know you know your caps better than this. That cap is so bad it kicks you in the nuts and tell you so.

                Chess?

Chess is a snap, except for that damn Bishop !!! It actually turns Corners. And it was a rhetorical question.

                  Nick,
I must have missed that thread, I guess. Also, I have never expressed an opinion one way or the other about the cap itself. I may be wrong, but I don't think there are any statements from me defending it. My comments have been aimed at the quality of evidence you used to discredit it.

Peter, when you look at it take a shot of the pasteboard for us. If you want concrete evidence I will provide it. I though the Heer markings were enough so to be even more certain I just need some more pics. Remember I did have this one in hand.

I wonder what is there all about to discuss, you know what is real or you don't know what is real.

                      cheers

Notice how poorly the visor is fitted to Hausser's cap. Not exactly what one would expect from fine German wartime manufacturing processes, hey? And on one of the highest ranking (and most respected) SS General's caps to boot! I wonder if this historically important piece would be reduced to the ranks of a 'rework' by today's 'experts'? Anomolies clearly occured.

Good eye Brian, that is quite a surprise. I've never seen that in any period photo before. I'd bet my house it wasn't how it left the hat maker though, most likely he sat on it and popped the stitches! He looks like he enjoyed a drink or two.
