    Waffen SS Officer Visor

I picked this one up about 15 years ago from an established dealer/collector. The TK and eagle are postwar repros, but I'm wondering if the cap itself is original. It seems to have many of the construction characteristics of the 2 listed on the Collectors Guild site, as well as others I've seen, and is very well made. This one never had a sweat shield of any kind. The sweatband has become brittle and split in a couple of places. Looking at the shade of the cloth, I'm thinking this cap may have been manufactured using Italian military ribbed wool. The cords are of a cloth/nylon like off white color, but have toned a light yellow tan where exposed, as has the white wool piping.

Interesting Hat. Foreign Manufacture may explain some of the construction. Piping looks a bit fuzzy. Are the Chinstrap buttons sewn down. I would say No to the Hat, but I would like it in hand to disimiss it entirely.

                    Dr Strangelove,

                    Thanks for your observations.

I would not call the piping fuzzy. Actually, it's identical to that seen in the closeups on the 2 WSS visors on the Guild site. The buttons are sewn in place. Additionally, you will find the typical white mesh material behind the lining, this mesh manifesting age fragility and yellowing. There is also a old ink stamping inside of the sweatband, to wit: CN37.

I like it. Nothing glaring from these pics.

                        Hat

The lining does not seem to match the condition of the sweatband. This hat does not impress at all.

I am with Peter. I never liked the folded over lining ends either. Not to say you won't find a period cap with them but it is most seen on fakes.

                            Folds

The folded over lining is a big turn-off as well as the ink stamp inside the sweatband. It is not an unattractive Hat from the exterior, but it sends up a lot of Red Flags when it is turned over.

Exterior looks good, interior is another matter though. Sweatband's been off for sure and not the kind of lining you would want to see.
