There must have been a degree of regulation as regards turn out otherwise why bother to inspect items aquired outside of the supply chain. Not just GD, many regiments did It.

Guy - GD uniforms were not standardized in quality. Their issued items were no different than anything available to other units. Those who had the option to, or were required to provide for their uniforms, had the same range of options as any individual - be it officer or NCO respectively. If they had an advantage by virtue of being an elite unit, it was that they were a higher priority for supply and...in a relative sense, "went without" to a lesser extent than most other units. In some cases, new items were issued to GD soldiers early in the process equipping.

My research indicates that you are somewhat correct that Berlin manufacturers may have had special arrangements with the unit. However, this seems to not have extended beyond their insignia.
