"For what it is worth, Angolia then goes on to say that this order was often ignored and that the majority of these caps were produced with aluminum piping...."

If only ever seen the aluminum piped officers caps for sale, never a white piped officers. Anyone doubting the existence of uniform and cap variations should have a look at this thread by Bill Petz "New photo Pickup's. There are an astonishing amount of variations on these period portrait pictures. Jacques, Ps I like the cap a lot.

      Hi guys,

thank you very much for this informative and adult discussion.
This was exactly what I had hoped for, no matter the outcome and final verdict. Naturally I am very happy that the cap is getting such favourable comments.
After initially posting this thread I went through some picture books and was quite surprised to see quite a few pictures of SS officer's caps with soutache in the original pictures. Unfortunately I couldn't see whether they were aluminum piped. Anyway, great stuff and thanks to all for your constructive comments.

Thought this might be an interesting picture for this thread.
The picture is of Obersturmführer Siegfried Klauck of tthe 16th Pionier Kompanie of the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Division. The picture was taken in November 1944. Interesting is that although a lower rank he is wearing an identical officers cap with what appears to me aluminum piping as well as the black Pionier soutache.

I have offered this cap for trade against FJ combat items only in the Estand.

I have seen the white-piped variety offered for sale. The most well known were manufactured by Clemens Wagner. One of those is part of the Sturmbannfuhrer Alfred Arnold grouping. Regulations notwithstanding, I don't think it was that uncommon to see officers of a variety of ranks wearing caps with both types of piping. The white piping is also found on some officer M43 caps.

I forgot to mention that I like the cap in question as being a purely wartime piece. The skull is a nice example, and is identical to the type used on the 2 piece insignia single button M43 caps, the style with the gray rayon linings and light pink size stamp.
