Nice Estate Auction find Fur Hat

I picked this up at an estate sale Saturday. The neighbor said the guy was at the Bulge and he wore this captured fur hat because he was freezing and it was worth its weight in gold. I have seen lots of these rabbit fur hats in my day, but this is the first one I am certain has not had the eagle added to it later. Was wondering:

Was the eagle only appropriate for NCO/Officers?

Is the wear pattern on the very back of the hat typical, and is it caused by wearing this under a helmet, or what?

Nice original hat. I was always of the opinion that eagles were added to these at the factory at the time of manufacture.

If you look at my pic of the prongs you will see that there is some heavy stitching to the left of the top prong. The eagle was sewn on at one time. Maybe the GI took the eagle off while he was wearing it, and put it back on later.

When I was a kid (circa 1964) I had seen one like yours with the eagle and wreath in your photo, but with a police eagle. It wasn't rabbit fur, it was more like some kind of curly brown wool.
