A dealer is offering this cap and I just wanted to see what you guys think of it. The eagle only has one pin attaching it and one pin on the skull has been repaired and of course they don't match. Considering it's not an RZM cap and the issues with the insignia, is $6800 still reasonable for a cap like this? Condition otherwise seems very nice. Thanks

with proper example mostly selling for over 10k now (which is out of reach for many), this piece will fill the gap for many just for display. with this price, nothing much to complain. -

I see nothing wrong with it...it's simply a private-purchase lid, purchased outside the RZM system. Private-purchase visors are much rarer than issue pieces, but much less in demand. More collectors want the ones with the SS runes on the logo and visor, along with the RZM tag, so this, along with the broken insignia, is probably reflected in the price (but how many fakes have we seen with the "correct" tags, stamps, and logos? )

The Hat
1. Mismatched late insignia, nice for W-SS.
2. Trikot wool top common to 95% of EM hats
3. Sweatband color total mismatch for visor underside color. Usually there is an effort to try to coordinate or color match these 2 items. IMO.
4. Shape is nice.
5. Private maker for Allgemeine hats is less desirable
6. Price is low. Perhaps became a hard to sell item. Something to think about.
7. Also, not hat box

This highlights a very odd but quite common situation.
On the basis of rarity, this should be a very valuable cap. An SS Officer bought this cap from a private source which compared to most caps which have survived to this day, is a pretty rare find.
However, we collectors nearly 70 years on, being for the most part highly suspicious and tuned into the market, deem it to to be less valuable than a "safer" purchase of an RZM cap with all the bells and whistles. There's only one reason for this, potential investment value.
This cap does not have the safety net of tags and stamps or that "textbook, blah, blah blah" element that is preferred so I'm not all surprised that Martin has offered it at below what is thought of as market value for an Officers black cap. He ain't no fool and has probably considered all of the above before setting the price. Better to have a quick sale than have it sat on the shelf for years and years like most of the other ss visors I've seen offered by other dealers.
Oh and just to be completely anal about it, Allgemeine isn't the right description is it? Allgemeine means general doesn't it? As in general service cap, not any and all black SS visor caps...

Good points above. Collectors set the prices not the rarity, importance, quality or history of an item! Often those aspects have a real bearing on why collectors rank order desirability but NOT always.
If it is any help I can say that after about 40 years of collecting and studying militaria that not everthing (by a long shot) maintains it's upward or downward rate of collector interest and pecking order. Every dog has it's day is more close to the truth.
Private purchase black SS officer caps may be worth 2x what the RZM ones bring in 20 years, if it happens it would not be the first time or even the 100th time that I have seen such reversals or changes in the hobby.Comment

SS obsession
I've only been in the TR hobby about 10 years, and the market for SS visor caps (along with SS daggers) never ceases to amaze me. I understand the emotional appeal, and the demand created by it, but an outside observer would say the situation is crazy. Other than some Lufts & Army infantrys, the SS visor caps seem to be one of the more common varieties. At shows & on websites there are always some around, and yet the price keeps going up & up. In fact if someone wanted to buy something for an "investment" (something I would never recommend on my own) I would suggest an SS visor cap - even though I could give no logical reason for the price rises! Pesonally I would much prefer a Diplo or a Chplain's as more excitng. But I am outvoted by the SS fanatics.
