While they make excellent repros of these this one sure looks like a good one to me.

    Best,

The underside of that visor looks like it went through a washing machine Johnny.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this later m40 cap. I own one exactly the same with the same application of the rondel, but hand sewn eagle. I can only assume that the rondels turned up late on the production line and were added after the lining went in.
I suspect that our caps are from the same manufacturer.
A good cap. If you have any doubts to it's originality, I'll happily be the fool that takes it off your hands.
        Best Regards,
        Mark.

Much thanks for all the opinions.
Do they get much rain in southern Italy?

            John,
            They Do!
Here's mine. Not a lot of washing at any stage, but a lot of sweat
            Regards,

                    Hi John,
No stampings left, I'm sorry to say. That's why I was pleased to see yours, as I suspect they are from the same stable...
Mine has been customized by the soldier to reduce the seal about the head and retain a forehead sweatband, a neat, practical field alteration.
                    Regards,
                    Mark.

I agree with you Bryon,in fact I think the whole hat has been, more than once.

Faded lining, stamps,no paint on exterior grommets etc,yet the hat looks like it was never worn (interior) I am not crazy about the vent grommets either.

                        Glenn,
I think John's photos possibly do not show the true condition clearly enough, so if he possibly can I'd ask him to take some shots in natural light with no flash, please - both exterior and interior?
As for the grommets, nothing to worry about at all. Here's mine - same magnetic outers with chipped off finish and rusting.
                        Regards,
                        Mark.

I agree 100% with NZ Mark on this one.

Have also seen a cap by that maker with the cockade applied through the lining like that. A returned soldier who I worked with had one along with some other nice German stuff he had brought back. Tried to buy it but he declined my offer saying he wanted it to go to his grandchildren,

I'm not sure if Bryon's remark refers to originality, condition, or is just the good natured ribbing he always gives me (one of his most grateful students! )
Anyway, here are some more pics taken in natural sunlight.

The edge of the bill shows wear like seen on the ass of a fat girl's jeans. The bill is cracked in two places...
