Panzer Side Cap...OK?

Mark,
Sorry I didn't have a chance to weigh in on this sooner. In answer to Gene's question there is photograpic evidence that shows that there were some Heer panzer caps in the SS/Luft cut. I have actually seen a couple that looked original...but try and convince anyone else.
This cap has so many problems. The cut doesn't even look right for SS or Luft. The wool looks rather cheesy, the lining material is horrid, the insignia sparsely sewn, oh well, like Glenn said "Not one that I would want."
Nice mannequin head, his eyes need some veins so they have a bloodshot appearance to match his "the Russians just broke through" stare. Keep up the good work.

Spectulation aside, the WH insignia is original for sure and that has to have some sort of reasonable value today because WH Panzer cap eagles and early model WH panzer cockades are not all that easy to find,

Here's an Osprey illustration of him. He wore the cap without a cockade!
It does not explain the cap in this thread...
I don't think the cap in question is Panzer polizei... The liner material reminds me of something French made (for the Germans?). Insignia is indeed fine, cap is odd, but not impossible...I am not concerned about the way the insignia has been handstitched like that. Not unheard of at all but the cap remains a mystery...If you want text book this one is not for you! That's for sure!Attached FilesLast edited by NickG; 01-25-2009, 11:52 PM.

I wonder how many "Mom" made period caps of pre-may 45 manufacture we have written off on this forum ?
Personally, I see no crime in variations. I know we say wait and get a text book one or save your money for better example but when you have been collecting for a while then a period variation can be just as interesting as a one looker but in a different way.
The thousand dollar question with a cap like this becomes, do you keep it as it is because it is period oddity or do you remove the insignia and restore a stripped text book example. (Text book example will have more dollar value.)
In my opinion the cap which started this thread is probably good enough to be left in tact and continue the discussions about what it is exactly. I see nothing blatant which says fake but on the other hand it is always going to have a question mark over it.
I still however think I would keep together with the insignia or do others disagree ?

This cap mainly gets back to price and personal collecting rules. If it's reasonable, then it may be worth it to have as a very unusual variation, but there is always that chance you may find out down the road that Bubba put that one together in his basement. Collectors personal call on this one. I would leave as is.

Excellent summation Richard. I could not have put it better myself,
