    Rarest of the Regular-Production Hats

I was just wondering what hats (non-general, non-SS) everyone considers to be particularly rare. I am not talking one-off visors, but regular production/issue, which, due to the limited size of the organisation, are almost non-existent today.

My first vote is for the SA-visor hat for SA members assigned to Hitler's staff, called the "Fuhrermutze" for the SA-feldgrau uniform. This one is being worn by Bruckner, but has an M-37 eagle and no SA roundel in the middle of his WH wreath. The other one he wore had an SS eagle and a leather chinstrap:

      rarest caps

      Hello Stonemint,

I was unaware of the special WH style SA Schirmmutze, very interesting. Are you sure that is Wilhelm Bruckner in the color foto? The fellow certainly has the body size, but the face? I guess it could be him though.

I am not sure if you are including non-Schirmmuetze caps. If so, then I would add to the list, green piped, Schutzpolizei Wintermutze/Bergmutze.
Worn by Polizei from larger towns and cities nestled in mountainous areas.
While a fair amount of Gendarmerie Bergmutzen (orange piped) exist in collections today, I've only seen two green piped examples that I felt were original.

Unfortunately, b&w fotos do not catch the differences in piping color, so there is really no way to estimate the percentage of green piped Schupo Bergmutze that were actually worn. These caps were mentioned in official uniform regulations (but not the green piped Po. M43, that's another debate)

Possibly, one of the rarest visors would be from the Sicherheits-Kontrolldienst. Members were referred to as "Kontrollmanner" and were responsible for patrolling the Chancellery, the Presidential Chancellery, the Chancellery of the Fuehrer, and Supreme SA Leadership Office, and in addition to security skills, a knowledge of building construction was a must in order to watch over the never ending contruction projects in the Reichs Chancellery.

These men were under the command of RSD CO, Rattenhuber, but were not part of the SS-BK or RSD. It seems they reached a strength of fifty men, armed with pistols, flashlights and SPECIAL UNIFORMS.
SOURCE: "HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY" Peter Hoffmann, pg. 58 & 59

I would be suprised if any of these caps remain today and to the best of my knowledge neither fotos nor illustrations exist of the "Special uniforms"
      worn by the Sicherheits-Kontrolldienst.

I am curious to know what other members come up with as "Rarest reg.-production caps"

      Best Regards

For having a fairly large organisation the feldgrau orange piped POSTSCHUTZ visor is among the missing in most collections Billbert

Dont forget the 'plate topped' white visor used by the 1936 Berlin Olympics officials....simply Soviet style! Oh, and the 'doormen greeters' at the Reichskanzlei..

Bob is right--so rare, there are no known period pics of it in wear, and I am unaware of any in collections.

This is from the Angolia NSKK book:

Another hyper-rare visor--the High Seas Ferry Service. I know of no period pics of it in wear, and I know of only one in a collection today (and let me assure you, it is gorgeous). (This is from the Shutt book):

I WILL MAKE IT EVEN RARER. THE VISOR CAP FOR AN ADMINISTRATOR OR PAYMASTER OF TRANSPORT FLOTILLA SPEER. THERE HAT WOULD HAVE SILVER INSIGNIA IN LIEU OF GOLD WORN BY THE BALANCE OF THE ORGANIZATION. THE ONLY KNOWN PIECE I KNOW OF FROM THIS GROUP IS A SCHARFUHRER MANTEL WITH SILVER INSIGNIA I BOUGHT FROM GERARD MANY YEARS AGO. HE GOT IT FROM A PICKER WHO FOUND IT IN MUNICH.

What is the truest statement about our hobby is that, unlike the dagger collectors, one can never have a complete collection of every regular-production TR visor ever made....

(But I can always try! )

                        You are completely right

The other votes are great examples of ultra rare caps, some of which I've never heard of, thanks for sharing the fotos and illustrations.

This is my rarest cap, the green piped Schupo Berg/Skimutze.

I believe Ernst-H has the only other one I've seen.

                              Hello gents,

I'm btt this thread with a few more fotos. I'm a bit disappointed that more folks did not show their "one of's" or rarely seen caps. I know you guys have some really rare caps out there!

Here are some under the hood shots of the Po. bergmutze to get this going again.

                              Cheers!
