      Great cap, Craig!

Has anybody ever been able to really detect any difference in
quality from one grade to another in Erel visors? It seems to me that a "Standard" model is just as plush as an "Extra" and so on.
I once thought it was the insignia used but over the years I could
detect no set standard. Materials seem interchangeable as well.
I also thought that my Infantry version (missing maker's mark)
was an "Extra" because it had a green lining like several other
"Extra"s I've known, but I've seen "Privat"s with the green lining
now as well and I've also seen both "Extra"s and "Privat"s with
      the gold lining, too.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason with the use of
the cockade vent either. I believe this can appear on any of the
      grades.
      Anybody Know?

        Grades of Erels

        Hi Brian -

I have had the good fortune to own several visors by Erel, and the difference to me at least was that the "Extra" and "Ideal" classes (never had a "Privat" or a "Triumph" ) Had more internal padding than the "Standard" and thus a more pronounced saddle shape. The insignia and even the vented cockades were all "options" that a soldat could have installed, just like on a car (my thanks to JohnJ for that little tidbit), so they don't necessarily belong only on the higher-class models. Another thing I've noticed, but don't know if it was SOP, is that I've never seen an Erel in the classes above "Standard" that was not in some form of doeskin wool. Hope this helps.

        Don

Here's a Luftwaffe Officers visor I purchased years ago from a 2nd Armored vet. Sorry for the quality as it's a photo of a photo..

I remember when I owned it how nice the quality was. It had the nicest looking doeskin wool, killer bullion, vented cockade and a perfect saddle shape. But it was only a EXTRA model. I suppose leaving two more upgrades, not knowing where IDEAL class fits in. So I was thinking what else could you put into a PRIVAT or TRIUMPH model? I'd say there is some confusion to the EREL classes...anyone know??

              Hi Don,

I can't say as I agree with you about the padding, at least not
across the board. I've never had an "Ideal" or "Triumph" but I've
had a couple of the others and I did not notice a "thick, thicker,
thickest, etc." in the hierarchy. If you look at Craig's "Standard"
it looks more padded than Steve's "Triumph". We would have to
squeeze 'em to be sure, but I don't think these two would take
              to kindly to that!

Also, doeskin was by far the most popular material used on Erels
but if you look over on the "Ruptured Duck" you'll see Bill Shea
has a very nice Panzer "Extra" in gabardine offered there.

Perry, I believe you posted that one before. It really is a beauty.
Oh well - we can't keep everything! (although some SOB's do! )

Maybe someone out there knows the order for the grades and the difference in each. Gary you out there?

But your right Brian, I've seen EXTRA models with all the bells and whistles, that's why I posted the one above. Then I've seen some PRIVAT models that don't look that great..

I don't recall seeing a EREL with the seam on the side..
Now take that visor for example, for a PRIVAT grade I would have thought it would have at least a complete bullion cocade, not a partial one...

                          Very nice cap, John!

But while it sports the trademark high Erel peak with a nice point,
it certainly doesn't appear to be overly padded. I've always liked
                          combination insignia the best.

When did EREL start using the class system. Here's a earlier cap.
