So now the big question, Ben.
Are you going to do a quality job and restore it's insignia (minus soutache, I'd think) ?
    Good old German ebay!

Very nice cap Ben, and as I've mentioned already there are no doubts in my mind that it is completely original
(or should that read incompletely )
Congratulations on another very nice tropical cap.

Isn't that the hat that the girl wore in Indiana Jones?

                Ben,

How dare you post something that does not conform to the textbooks on German headgear we all have. No grommets on a tropical cap...blasphemy! The only thing worse is grommets on a cap where they don't belong. Please post this type of headgear on other forums that no one pays attention to anymore. I hope you realize I am being sarcastic here and actually like it very much. I am sure those cunning Germans just did this to confound future collectors in case they lost the war.

The tropical "mechanics" caps had the red lining but were without grommets I seem to recall. They are often attributed as Luftwaffe. Could this not be the equivalent only for a different service perhaps but with added insignia? Just a thought.

                    Yours, Guy.

                          Ben,

All my textbooks on German headgear are wet now and reek! Thats some reach you have.

I agree! Wonderful cap. The term textbook is too often used as the gospel in authenticating items. I know its the safe way to go with all the good copies out there, but with all the different firms involved in clothing production its ridiculous to believe variations didn't exist. However most variations will exhibit similar characteristics to textbook examples as far as materials, stamping and construction are concerned. Great score.WR Jim

Grommets or no, Ben, nothing scary about that one. You really know how to find 'em!
