    crusher cap question

    Hi

I like that the forum is a place to learn. There is a nice crusher cap for sale on e-stand

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...96#post2324796

I niticed that there is a big difference between the color of the base of the capbelow the lower artillery pipin and the rest of the cap. I had not see that detail in other crusher caps that I had seen. I also notice that seems to be a "shadow" around the cockade?

    thanks

    Juan

It's hard to say what happened to this cap. Looks to me like the insignia was replaced at some point. Though well preserved, the cap speaks of alot of use. I like it and it certainly has the combat worn look.

I agree, 101% original. The base piping has different color becouse of the sweat grease plus some field dirt (being a salty example). As for the cockade insignia it looks that it was replaced ones. Any way, a great example.

I agree with all. An original example with replaced insignia.

This might sound crazy but eyeing the thread on the insignia, it looks dessicated and very old to me. Again I say, who knows what happened to the original insignia....maybe some unsightly stain and just had to be replaced. I think some of the officers liked their caps like baseball players of today and just wore them until they were tatters.

            Juan,
The use of a different material for the base of the cap is a relatively common occurence on period hats. It is no cause for concern.

I could agree, everything is possible with these 'things'.

Juan, you will find the base material (in early) caps to be different to that of the upper....the base was generally a 'harder wearing' material for obvious reasons!

The insignia surely has been added and the 'shadow' is where the original wreath was stitched. The cap band is faded which accentuates the differing colors.
                Regards,
                Dave

                  .
Hi Dave, now I see what Juan means. I though just the piping and not the base material (still working in my English comprehention )

                  All the best!

Well, since its my cap I better defend myself. While my intentions are good I should mention that a shadow is not and was not obvious to me until my crappy digital camera and its need to make every object 3 times brighter that it actually is. After looking closer at the insignia it is apparent that it indeed has been repositioned either from coming loose during wear or possibly replaced all together although the wear between the two insignias seem to correlate.

Still it is a well worn battle beauty!

                      Dear Gebirgsjäger

You cap has a lot of character. I would like to thank everyone as it had been a great learning experience for me.

                      thanks

A nice Salty original. No harm with the replaced insignia

In case no one has noticed, apparently a large corner of the cockade insignia is missing from the right side (viewer's) which would explain why such a large area of unfaded badge cloth is exposed next to the wreath. See comparison with the photo of the medical crusher in Mike Davis' collection. (I hope I am not violating forum rules by reposting the photo here).

Paul, your're right. The insignia is a cut down version of the norm..and unfaded material is exposed because either another wreath was on the cap at some point or the wreath that is on now was cut down.
