This is on ebay.de right now--at first I didn't like it, but the company still exists to this day:

Chinstrap is of a type I have never seen before--looks like a replacement:

Hat has minimal padding. Stitching is visible below the bottom ring of piping:

Under the hood--not much in the way of "the art of the fold":

Lining--the town, Neuotting, is in Bavaria on the Swiss border and has a population under 10,000:

Now, here is where it gets interesting. They are still in business today, and even have a website www.hut-meyer.de
It was started by this woman in 1924. Looking at the site, it still looks like a mom & pop shop:

So, the hat looks like a postwar creation to me, but given the cottage maker element, I might be willing to excuse its shortcomings.

Who wants to email the lovely Anna and ask her if this is one of their products from the NS-Zeit?!: (Or maybe this one is her "handarbeit"!)

Chris, why disregard the 'gut'!! If at first you didn't like it there's a reason and THAT reason will never go away

My (first) impression was very early post war...Police?

I just realized the same seller of the above cap is selling this one (but I do like the chinstrap on this one better ):

Dave--I think it was the lovely Anna who clouded my judgement for a minute there....

I was tempted as she is a cutie..

However, I ain't never writ no book or never spoke at no college and never had no book learnin'....BUT I do believe in the 'gut feeling' and it has proven spot on in many cases over 4 decades
