    Field-Made M43 Cap

Hey guys, I had a previous thread about this cap. I now have more pictures since I have the cap in hand. It's completely hand-sewn out of brown wool [ kind of like Russian wool or Todt wool, etc.] It has honest wear to it and looks like other field-made items I've seen. There's a small tear in the brim where you can see the stiffening material......a kind of waxed cardboard or something. Let me know what you think. Thanks a lot and cheers.

not knowing who it came from originally its anyones geuss it looks quit old ?does it have that smell that we all love i passed on it because it seemed the seller was trying to seel the story and not the cap,if you got it for a fair price i.e. cheap and you are happy with it thats all that matters its hard to judge this type of non regulation piece from pictures alone if it gives you good vibes inside keep it,if it makes you uneasy and you get up in the middle of the night and compare it to other types of wool from your collection send it back.
        best regards,

It could have been made by anyone at any time. This style of hat was popular among German farmers for decades after the war. It could have been made in a POW camp, or by a reenactor, or as a movie prop. I think it is an interesting hat, in any case.

This was not a Heer cap, agree that this design was very common among the german civilian population during and after the war so it seems to be sometime that period but has no value as a militaria item in my opinion !!!

The problem with any of these "field-made' items is that you can never find indisputable proof that the item is period made or military used. At best, you can hope to NOT find evidence to disprove it is what it purports to be. Beyond that, there will always be doubt.

              Guess that's why I don't collect them.
