No expert here only DAK student in the back row. The combination of no makers mark on early model without sweatband, and eagle has been placed upside down, sewn, then flipped over and finished, agian later model trend, and inside grommets all seem contradictions imho. I have cap very similar to this I will post soon, which is fake.
Just some thoughts from the back row of the class.

Is this an expertly made reproduction or is it the "RS" of tropical M40's of approx 1942 manufacture

That gentleman is the question ???

If those grommets are brass ? then that is not a good sign or are they magnetic ?

As for no makers name ? (unusual but there is more then one reason why that can happen.) This style of cap never seem to ever have a makers name or number however.

They are a well made cap but are they real of pre-May 45 manufacture

There was a whole batch of these made in the 1990's, and I saw them in a shop here in Chicago (now out of business because he was a fake dealer) and at a show in KY. There was one for every soutache and I almost got burned myself. Very scary stuff...

Looks very close to the ones made in small numbers like 10 years ago by a very busy importer/exporter from the USA.. I think he was getting them made in poland..Using all original insignia of course.. Billbert

Interesting, were they made in Poland post-war or found in Poland as un-issued war-time surplus and sold cheap in the USA

The ones I have seen, not only had orginal insignia but have been made out of the correct twill material in various olive shades. Never been able to make up my mind about the red liner material and the grommets are not the regular zinc type.

In fact they are so well made it makes one wonder what the tropical caps being sent to southern Russia looked like. I have never seen a veteran tropical M40 from Russia. Where they the same makers as worn in Afrika, Italy and Greece ?

I am sure some member will be able to tell us more about the post-war manufacture of these caps but this does raise a question or two.

              Look at this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=228528
My cap came from Ukraine (Southern part of East Front).
