    Advice on dealers !!!

    First of all i would like to say hi to all forum members since i'm new here !!!
    I'm looking for Waffen-SS headgear, unfortunatly i dont have a collection yet but i hope i will find some headgear and start posting new threads with pics like you guys...
    I have several items i would like to purchase but of course, the price is high and before i even think of buying them i will ask for advice from you guys since i see that you really know what you are talking about
    Does anybody have any advice concerning dealers ???

    Hello Schwarz....glad to have you here! I personally like the Collector's Guild,
    www.germanmilitaria.com. The owner, Peter Whamond, is a great guy and very helpful. He just sold a WSS visor...it had been listed for a week and was a very fine example. Start saving now! I also like www.ulric-of-england.com and www.relichunter.com ...relichunter has a very nice Algemeine SS NCO cap right now...oh if I had the money! Good luck.

      First get some good reference books and do research, and more research. Buy the item, not who is selling it. Join the different forums and learn from the posting and advice given in them.

        I would agree - buy the books, study the forums first. Spend some time at this. There are many fine dealers (certainly Pete Whamond, Bill Shea and Gerard Stezelberger among them, as noted below), but prices often reflect the reputation of the dealer rather than the going rate between collectors and dealers - much lower, be advised. If you want guarantees, buy from the prominent sellers. If you trust your own knowledge, buy on less well-known sites to your advantage.

          If you are going to get into headgear there are only three dealers I would focus on, especially with higher end stuff. Your best bet would be Gerard at Relichunters. Followed by Bill Shea at the raptured duck and Peter Whamond of the collector’s guild. They have the best inventory and have the safest stuff. Ulric I would stay away from for two reasons, price and price. His prices are not even on this planet. There is also one more dealer that everyone raves about but I don’t see it at all. His prices are high and half the visors on his site have little flaws that he fails to mention like replaced sweatbands. I wont name names though.

              By all means, buy some books, and learn. But the books can be wrong also. I have SS Headgear, a collectors Guide by Kit Wilson, and there are 2 wrong visors in it. I do not own a SS visor, But I would not buy one without putting many pictures on this forum and getting ok's from all the knowledgeable guys. If you do a search for SS visors, you will see the many bad ones that have fooled me and others.

                A few words of advice before jumping into collecting headgear, would be to study the topic of your interest very indepth. That could be books, forums, internet dealers etc. You are choosing a hobby that is full of reproductions, fantasy items or frankensteined. It only takes one mistake and you can be taken for thousands of dollars. It's nice to just buy from dealers but you will be paying a premium and at those prices, on an average salary, your collection will be pretty small. SO study before buying and you will save yourself a bunch of money in the long run.

                  At the risk of tooting our own horn, this forum alone is the best reference book on the market for separating the fake from the real--many fakes have been "outed" here, and many hats have stood up to the strongest scrutiny. I would recommend viewing as many threads on this forum as you can.

                  As far as headgear goes, I would recommend Relic Hunter, Shea, and the Collector's Guild, as they have the largest selection of hats. The other would be Brian Maederer, who has many nice caps for sale, but at not-so-nice prices--he currently has a boxed signals is going for almost $4000!

                    WTF, he is crazy!!!!!!!! Watch out for repaired hats on that site too. I have seen a good handful that IMHO have replaced sweatbands. Although you won’t find a bigger selection.

                            I have dealt with Tony Jessen and Gerard at Relic Hunter, both are good guys IMHO, and I have to agree, do your homework first! This forum has proven to be one of the best research tools out there, you'll learn a lot (I know I have). Welcome to the forum, and enjoy!

                              Here is the Signals on Maederer's site--it is the best one I have ever seen, but I can't do the deal at this price. It is marked "Elegant", but is in an August Muller box--does anyone know if Muller made caps under this label?:
