    Hungarian M43 Style Officer's Cap

A couple members PMed me and were interested in detailed photos of this cap. Rather than emailing i will post them here as it is interesting to see a Foreign Armies copy of German M43. It is tailor made and the flaps are there for style only. There are no button holes. The man's tunic is on this thread:

I purchased it in Southern Germany from a man who bought it in Budapest. It is not for sale right now. The rank is Lt. Col. of Cavalry/Hussars.

Detail of hand stitching to lining

Detail to band, one monogram of the owner remains. Not an overseas cap with a bill added. Tailor made from uniform fabric with silk lining. Hope this helps with your interests in this hat.

            Hello
That is a nice cap ,thank you for sharing.
These were actually copied from the WW1 Austrian caps ,as used during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
            Regards

              Cap

All hats like this trace their linage back to WWI Gebirgstruppen and Austro-Hungarian Hats -as do Modern Baseball caps. I have been told by Hungarian speaking collectors that this type of hat was not worn until Mid-War period and was termed by the Hungarian Army the M44 Field Cap. I can't read Hungarian so there is no way for me to personally verify this. Maybe some one from Hungary or one of the collectors who PMed me will respond. This style appearently gained popularity with all troops after seeing the German M43 circa Mid-war. It is lower than most peaked field caps of the First World War and has a slightly larger visor.

                very nice cap,
jhodgson your right, this kind of caps were introduced in 1944 for hungarian personel, but by mountain troops gendarmerie and border guard units it was in use troghout the whole war.(Mainly with leather visors).
This cap is not the standard 44M variant, it's an earlier one, and somebody tailored a visor for this. As you can see it has two visors, one turned up and the normal one. Factory made 44M caps had no turned up visors. By the way it's a nice original one.
                regards

                  Thanks!

Good to know which answer was correct. I am very interested in Hungarian Uniforms but it is difficult to find much about them in English, the things I have learned are from German publications. Hungarian items turn up in the US but usually the seller knows very little about what they are. I wish I could find more items. Very interesting tunics and also the history of the service on the East Front and the battles towards the end of the War near Budapest. Thank you again
