The moths got to it first - Is there any hope for this cap?

I just picked this up today. The moths ate almost everything except for the lining and the insignia.

Is there any way to restore this thing without creating a "repro" or should I keep the insignia?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brad

          j'avais un camarade...

          Hello Brad,
according to the insignia and lining, this one was mint before meeting some starving moths. IMHO, you should keep the all thing together. I've seen before woolen items with some moth bites, but this one is a moth bite with some wool around...impressive

That may be the most extreme case of mothing I have ever seen! I'd suggest keeping the cap just as it is - as a true relic. And I'd still rather have this cap any day than a repro.

Those "remains" are pretty neat, actually. It's almost like having an x-ray picture of the hat, only better, to where you can really see how these hats were constructed. Definitely worth keeping as is.

OMG, those moths really tore that thing apart.

Yes, I agree it is a "relic" and I will certainly consider leaving it "as is". I just need to find a good way to display it or better yet to keep it so no more pieces fall off.

I passed on a waffenrock that I think the same moths trashed, front was ok, but it literaly had no back. And the price was too high. I had to pay 60 Euro for what was left of this cap, I hope that was not too much, but I did like the fact it was original and the liner and insignia were ok.

                    Hi Brad -

I agree with those who say keep it as is - it will be a great reference as far as construction goes - sort of like the engine blocks and weapons that are "cut aways" so you can see their inner workings...
