IMO the colour is not yellow but light green as for Pz. Grenadiers and the change was periode made. I wouldn't try to clean it!!!!
Many Infantery regiments (white) changed to Pz.Gren. Regiments (light green) after 1943 and of course not every soldier bought a new visor or piped tunic and changed the colour for himself. I once saw a NCO Inf. Waffenrock with original sewed light green insignias and handmade coloured piping like this. Btw I also own such a converted Inf. visor!
So from what I can see on the pictures I would say its ok and original!

Yes, it's possible war time made or last week.
Well by the moment I will keep it with the yellow or light green piping. Perhaps if I visit Florida I will give the cap to Horatio Caine (CSI), and sure he will told me the name of the person who painted the cap

A recoloured waffenrock would not float my boat due to this reason. A cap is something that if a collector is happy with that is okay, a future buyer when you sell is where a problem may come.
Any chance of posting it as it would be for reference purposes not for stating something we would already be aware of. cheers
