"Alteste Berliner"--A Primer

If anyone has an Alteste they want to sell let me know. These things are an icon in collecting. What collection would be complete with out one? Maybe if Whittman comes to grips with the fact he bought a fake maybe I can pic up that signals for $50 or so.

The Gendarmerie Alteste hat just went for $380 on Manions--for another couple hundred bucks he could have gotten himself a decent original NCO. I guess it proves that these things are collectible after all....

The latest Alteste--note the Trikot. Insignia appears all original, but the chinstrap is slightly off:

I have never seen this on an Alteste before--an oilcloth SB:

This also has the standard gray-cotton (NOT silk) lining--the side-panel lining is more coarse in terms of weave than the top panel lining, which is a polished cotton:
