As this has come up again, I thought I'd let you know that this item has left our recognised dimension.

I have been informed by the owner that pinking shears have been used to take care of it.

I think this fits in with the accepted view that pinking shears are only used on repro caps, he didn't want to damage a straight edge pair of shears on this one!!!!!

I agree with Glenn the most, if it were real, its super rare, and wont surface to see the light of day amongst normal collectors.

Whoaaaa what a piece of Junk. Did this guy really cut this cap up? He must be out of pocket as well as his mind. He could have sold it as a repro and got something back.

I don't even want to think of all the German helmets we shot up, as kids. Any helmet without a liner was just for target practise.

Now, the hat is his property and the owner has the right to do as he pleases with it.

Hi Bob, I like the helmet being shot up bit, what they'd be worth today..

I'm not sure what the owner paid for the cap , he told me that if it was wrong it was going, just to make sure that no one else fell for it in years to come. Not a bad idea really.

I hate to see hats destroyed, even fakes. I'm restoring an Alteste right now just as a 'filler' for a cap I'll never have an original example of. I think in these instances (a PZ SS crusher for example), that an original is so incredibly rare, that a filler is all most of us could ever dream of owning. Wouldn't it have worked to take a Sharpie and write "REPRO" on the liner and inside of the sweatband? Then it would take some considerable effort to try and scam the next person, right?

Maybe this is a stupid question...but if this hat is so rare as you mentioned, how would so many people know it is a fake.

If it is so rare that no one expected one to surface, how can we be sure that this one is not the real deal, and that it might have surfaced for some strange reason?

Hi Flemming, that is a good point.

The owner explained to me at the last Stratford upon Avon show that only when he removed the liner did the cap show him its fakeness. The underside shone like a crazy diamond, so out came the pinking shears.

It is something he does with fakes, slice em up like an East End Gangster!
