SS Officer's Unissued Black Oversea Hat

This hat belongs to my friend Mike and is posted for your review and comments.

It is an Unissued, or should I say "un-worn" Black SS Officer's Overseas Hat.

                  Ron,

Wonderful hat and only the 2nd officer I have ever seen with the rare bullion overseas cap eagle. It is hard to express my excitement at seeing such a rare cap.

                    Ron,

Is the code on the button 1194/40?

                          Ron,

I have believed that these caps were intended for the first SS panzer troops in the late 1939 through all of 1940. Th other cap I examined, over 3 decades ago, had the identical eagle, 1194/40 skull button and same black feldmutze tag. Yours is nicer, with the original paper label!

Again, this is a real treat for me to see such a rare cap. I was wondering if there were more officer's examples than the one I had seen. You have never failed to impress me with the wonderful items you have collected.

Well, maybe I am the only skeptic. I don't recall ever having seen a period phtoto of a cap like this being worn. I have doubts but am always open to new info....

                              Mike,

I believe there are photos of this type hat (skull button and eagle on side of cap) being worn for enlisted ranks. It makes sense that an officer's version was available. The short lived cap insignia style was replaced, in 1940 with the standard bevo or flatwire SS totenkopf und adler. I would believe that many of the caps bore the later bevo or flatwire insignia. From the very few original examples of SS panzer overseas caps that exist, I would further assume that they were either rapidly worn out or were disgarded. There are so few original SS panzer overseas caps, of any pattern, that it is more rare to see one on the market than in a collection.
