    Visor Cap Vocabulary 101:

    Gents--

As you all know, the dagger, medal and helmet guys all have their own lingo. However, this forum has come up with many great descriptors (some of which have even made it to Ebay).
For our newer guys (and the visor cap dabblers), lets organize our dictionary with definitions (and pictures). Feel free to add to the list.

    1. Visor Geeks: That's us.

    2. Sattleform: Hats with high-peaks and oval-shaped top-panels.

    3. Tellerform: Hats with lower peaks and circular top-panels.

    4. Wehrmachtschnitt: Basically a civil/political hat with a saddleshape.

    5. Depot Queen: An unissued hat that was never worn.

    6. Dead-stock/New-Old Stock(NOS): Same as a depot-queen.

    7. Salty: A hat that was worn hard throughout the war.

    8. s3 (or S Cubed): A hat with Style, Symmetry, and Shape (credit: Gene)

    9. Fascist Aesthetic: What intellectuals think of #8.

    10. Operatic: Another intellectual pejorative for TR hats/uniforms.

    11. One-looker: A hat that based on pictures alone is 100% wartime.

    12. Frankenstein: A hat made up of wartime and postwar parts--generally
    rare hats (credit: John Casino)

    13. "Franky"--shorthand for #12

    14. Red Flag: Something that may indicate that something was done postwar, requiring a 2nd look.

    15. Tell: Something that immediately gives away something being postwar (the term is from poker)

    16. "Pop the Hood": A look under the front sweatband (credit: NTZ).

    17. "Pop the Trunk": A look under the rear of the sweatband.

    18. SB: Sweatband

    19. SS: Sweatshield

    20. Panels: There are 5 panels used in the manufacture of the body of a visor hat--the very top, 2 front panels, and 2 side/rear panels.

    21. Crown: The circumference of the hat body.

    22. Peak: Generally, the highest point on the hat where the 2 front panels joint with the piping and top panel. (The brits use this term for the visor as well).

    23. "Jewel Quality": Any insignia that still has all its protective laquer/frosting.

    25. "Rope Cords": Chincords that are very thick and rope-like.

    26. 3-D Cockade: A bullion cockade made up of various unterlagens given it a three dimensional effect--most commonly seen on LW Vented Erels.

    27. "Dubl-thick" piping: Piping around the crown that is at least 2 times the thickness of the piping on the wool band.

    28. "Sag": This is where the crown-stiffener is bent/broken, causing the peak to sag forward.

    29. "Crease": This is where there exists indentations on both of the 2 front-panels of the body.

    30. "Drumtight": This is the opposite of #'s 28 & 29--the cap spring is still present, with no sag/crease.

    31. "Sameplane": This is where the visor, band, and body all lie on the same plane--they are flat.

    32. Lids: A term for hats.

    33. "Tagged & Bagged"--Where the hat comes with its original packaging.

QUADRANT MARKS: found in Erel caps, front, sides and rear...used in the manufacturing process to maintain seam location and found on the upper liner.

REUPHOLSTERED: caps that have been expertly taken apart, standard piping removed and 'exotic' or General piping added.
                    Regards,
                    Dave

If I have done nothing more to add to any visor discussion at least I get credit for “pop the hood” & “let take a look under the hood”.

"Black-light test": You are looking for the glow in white threads under fluorescent black lite.
Here is a wreath I just acquired which glowed like a neon light, compared to a wartime LW officers:

Here is the rear of the postwar wreath behind the paper backing under UV light--see how on the real LW insignia, the 3 horizonatal "wing" threads don't glow:
