What is the significance of the tresse on the top? Does that indicate an Officer? I've seen a lot of pictures of kubankas in wear in period pictures, some have the tresse , some do not. There's a full-page color picture in the book "Signal, Hitler's Wartime Picture Magazine" by S.L. Mayer, showing a very clear picture of a Don Cossack laying on the ground by his horse; his shoulder board is of a Cossack Corporal, & his kubanka has the red top but no tresse.
