Mint RLB Visor

Well, I'm home today on muscle relaxers after having thrown out my back ( too many years of football and wrestling always comes back to haunt you, sooner or later!). I broke another vow in purchasing this cap--that is to collect only Officer visors, but this one I couldn't resist, because it is "stonemint", and is my (as you all know) favorite manufacturer, Pekuro
(plus the wife really likes the lilac piping).

It is a "tellerform", and is an interesting example for a few reasons, which I will show you.
Here is the frontal:

Right side--for an EM/NCO cap, it has a very rich doeskin wool body that is a little more bluer than LW:

No mothing, just a slight bit of age crazing to the leather chinstrap. This is the left side:

The sweatshield has the first style RLB insignia, along with the paygrade info. Also note the standard Pekuro font:

Note the standard Pekuro sweatband perforation pattern. The sweatband is also leather. Also, the lining is the standard waterproof type.

OK, here is where it gets interesting--"under the hood." I believe this hat was originally issued in 1936 or 1937, due to the first-style RLB logo (the second style used a swastika on a starburst). What the original RLB member did was to period upgrade his hat in 1938 to conform to the new insignia requirements. Prior to 1938, the RLB used just a political eagle and a cockade with no wreath. The 2 holes from the previous cockade are visible in the pasteboard.

The other interesting thing is that unlike most wartime Pekuros, the cap spring is not in-built into the piping.

Now, here is what we all like to see in our Pekuros--"ribbing"--although faint.

This is where it really gets interesting--instead of hand sewing the lining down, Pekuro machine-sewed the top part of the lining to the pasteboard, just like in a J. Sperb cap:

I've been trying to add one of these to my collection for the last few years.
My brother in laws dad brought one back in 45 but his mother is not quite ready to sell it to me yet..well maybe in time.

One beautiful piece of headgear. Too bad the owner had no consideration for the future collector market by modifying his cap for the new insignia.
The way some of the new generation collectors think, anytime a man got promoted or insignia was changed, they threw all the old stuff out and bought new. Not!! Seriously, this is a fine addition to the collection.
Condition is "stonemint." Take care of those aches and pains. I'm getting a new knee on Monday. That is what happens when we never think we will wear out the body parts.
