This explains everything: The Deutsche Afrika-Linien GmbH & Co./ John T. Essberger GmbH & Co. (DAL/JTE) is a giant German shipping company, based in Hamburg. The company operates container and general cargo services between Europe, the Canary Islands, eastern and southern Africa, and Indian Ocean ports.

It was founded in Hamburg in 1924 as the Essberger-Tankschiffreederei, by John Theodor Essberger (I think an eminent character of the German merchant marine during the Third Reich also). After the war, the fleet was dispossessed. However, Essberger soon built up a new fleet and became once again one of the largest private shipowners in West Germany. After Essberger's death in 1959, the company was taken over by his daughter, Liselotte von Rantzau-Essberger (1918–1993). Today, the fleet of DAL/John T. Essberger has 34 dry cargo ships and tankers.

Less than three days are left and the price is still very affordable. So, in my humble opinion, this is an interesting piece (rarely seen) for collectors of this particular sector (as opposed to the repetitive fake WSS generals ... )

A side note (I apologize in advance if I ruin the idyllic atmosphere of the Holy Christmas): this is the level of eBay Germany since a long time: eagles out, wrecks in. A single wreck goes out every week and immediately some idiots raise the offers, ruining the auctions and very badly accustoming the sellers. In this way the only source has dried up (obviously for those who do not own the bellows wallet ...) and only the crazy prices of auction houses and disinterested collectors remain.

First time I see an Alfred Grunau in flesh and bones. It is currently on eBay Italy:

From the outside limited shots, I like it. A little less about the completely perforated sweatband and the graphic style of the logo inscription. However, in the absence of specimens to be compared, I refrain from judgments.

There are no doubts about the real existence of Alfred, Kürschnermeister in Rastenburg, Schloßstr.6. Just a little genealogy about:

The company was initially founded in 1836 by Alfred's grandfather, Adolf Julius Grunau (married with Caroline Lujahn), Kürschnermeister Dean in Rastenburg Neustadt, who died on February 27, 1879.

His son, Hermann Leo Grunau (born on December 20, 1855 and married with Berta Kendziorra), also he a Kürschnermeister in Rastenburg, in turn took over the parental business at the age of 24 and moved to a newly acquired property on Rollberg. In 1901 the company moved again to its final location in Schloßstr. 6.

Finally Alfred Grunau , born on November 20, 1898 in Rastenburg and KIA on April 7, 1944 on the eastern front, took over on 1924 the family business. As a curiosity, Alfred's older brother, Leo Adolf Grunau (born on May 14, 1882), was also a Kürschnermeister in Heilsberg. There is no identification data of Alfred’s wife because she remained in Rastenburg until the end and she went missing in 1945 when fleeing in front of the Russians’ invasion. It is known that they had a son, Günther Grunau, Kürschner and born in Rastenburg in 1927, who died in Hamburg in 1990.
