Air vent on WH visor cap

    Dear All,

Browing E-Bay today, I came across this interesting studio photograph of a German soldier - link below

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...9448&rd=1&rd=1

Apart from the fact that the poor fellow who poses on the picture was certainyl not a member of any elit rifle company , his cap presents an interesting feature: it has two air vents (presumable on each side) similar to those normally found on polizei visors. Our chap, however, is a WH man!

That may not be a great deal for most, but I must admit that I quite like those little variations which break the rules!!

Just for that I may well buy that portrait...

    Kind regards

    Alex

    Poor bloke looks crossed eyed!
As for the vents, very interesting. Ironically, they look to be the same kind of large eyelets with mesh as found on the Hermann Mayer caps posted on this forum just now.
I got asked recently if any WH visor could have had vents like this and my answer was no, not in my experience. Maybe this photo proves otherwise?

Hang on a second, that's a customs or forestry eagle isn't it? (I forget which) In which case I've seen a few visors for those organisations before that have vents, not a problem.

To be fair to you Ben, I thoroughly believe that this is a very rare variation if not a mistake from the maker! Would there be any chance for this man was from a feldgendarmerie battalion this explaining (maybe) that?!

Thats the fun of the hobby!!Always an exception to the book learned rules..Looks like a big mellon for a head so maybe the owner had the hat custom made to address that personal issue..Have seen 1 or 2 in the years gone by that I thought were A ok..If the guy was poor or thrifty MAYBE an option to get a proper green band tailor added to an original police cap....Billbert

That may be a custom eagle (altough it is not obvious in my opinion) but why the wreath is a WH one! Even more puzzling!!!

Ragarding Forestry eagles, I believe that they are quite similar to political one - if my recollection does not let me down...

By the looks of him he was probably in customs (a bit large, lol) and volunteered to be transferred to Heer. Maybe he didn’t have the dough and just converted his lid. Yes customs did have the vents for sure.

Well, if that was so, what about the pipping? bearing in mind that customs is green (if I remember well), our man did not have much choice but to join the mountain troops! Poor guy, all that because of a hat

Guys, I don't know about you but sometimes I hate when a period photo pops up and throws all the rules in the trash.. They could have shown more consideration for us poor collectors!

Quite right Ben! It is just not fair!!

This man has definitely more to say than his crossed eyed looking seems to suggest.

But as Billbert rightly put it, that is the very fun of the hobby, isn't it!?

Just to laugh a bit and to continue in the list of the Collectors' List of Horrors, what would you say about my friend Gerrhard of the IF Reg. 134 who wears an officer style visor cap (with bullion eagle - although poor quality - and wreath) with a NCO chinstrap!!

                    Guys, everything is falling apart...

Yes but he is an officers candidate, he was just slowly transitioning into the officers visor, lol. Hell I think he has a bullion bird too.

Looks like he has a bullion breast eagle also, that must be against regulations. But if he comes from a rich family maybe money talks.......

                          Nothing changes.........

Steve this guy looks so excited to become an officer he probably had his tabs and boards in his pocket, lol. That chin cord is about to jump off too. Wow, look at the buttons, they are silver. Man this guy can't wait.
