Nick, some of the earlier Allg caps did have cream/gold rayon linings and the runes in a circle. The RZM tag was white linen and marked "Tuchmutze" which is different from the later versions with the orange oilcloth which were marked "Dienstmutze". Here's a pic I've got on file, I forget who the owner is. Solo's cap could be one of these.Comment

The cream lining in RZM issue SS hats has actually nothing to do with the date that they were made. The cream lining is found in the "sonderanfertigung" higher quality caps that cost a little more than the standard cap that had the rust coloured lining.

Thanks Derek. I've heard the name "Eigentumsmuetze" in regards to these caps as well. Does it mean roughly the same thing?Comment

Yes, both terms mean the same thing and are both used in the official SS price lists. The hat featured a better quality lining and sweatband than the standard cap and in my experience they are harder to find in the collecting world.
Don't forget that all the Allgemeine-SS caps are private purchase, only the SS-TV and SS-VT were issued with caps.
