    The Perils of Being a Closet Collector....

    Apparently, the owner of the "collection" at auction in the current (and past) C & T Auction passed away, and his Estate is now auctioning it off.

    According to the site:

    "This auction comprises a private European collection of WW2 German militaria, mostly consisting of cloth headdress and steel helmets. This collection has been put together over a period of time from private house buys, flea markets (flohmarkt) and internet auction sites"


    I have gone through both Auctions, and I can say every visor I have looked at is a fake (most are ground-up fakes, with a few Jankes & Frankensteins sprinkled in).
    (The vintage of these fakes is primarily from the 1990s, so it is not like we are talking ancient collecting history.)

    Most of the fakes appear to be made by the same faker, so the Decedent (ie, the collector who passed away), must have had a direct line to a single dealer, who fed him whatever he wanted.

    I have never seen these specific hats before (although I have seen others made by the same hand), so the collector had to be a closet collector.

    I would have to guess he paid over 500K for these creations, and now his relatives are (unfortunately) reaping the loss.

    Anyone have any info on who the collector was, and where he purchased these? I would presume that he was in the UK, as that is where the auction is.

        Wow, perpetrating a fraud at the $500,000 or more level is some serious felony-level criminal action. I hate to think that this collector worked very hard for that money, only to have him and his heirs ripped off by a dealer or dealers. I know it happens all the time (and in a much larger scale), but it is still shocking.

              A true encyclopedia of horror. And even with stringent rules: "All bidders must satisfy themselves with what they are bidding on and buying. Many of the items in this collection, if not original, may have been produced using original parts. Buyers must satisfy themselves with what is original and what is not ". While incredible as a kind of unlucky lottery, I have to say that any customers will get what they deserve ...

                Well, I looked at all of the FJ helmets and it is quite an exotic group of double decaled camos. Unfortunately, only two out of the whole lot of 7 or 8 had original components (i.e., original liner, chinstraps). The camo application were all bad. Interestingly, the overwhelming number of FJ exotics had the same fake LW eagle decal. This supports the notion that a single source was feeding him bad FJ helmets. Poor guy.

                  No return privilege on anything.... me thinks there will be some unhappy campers in the post auction wreckage. What a bloody sh*tshow!

                    Trouble is that after the first C & T Auction in the Spring, these fakes were immediately being resold on Ebay (and by some dealers as well)
                    No doubt the remainder of the successful bidders are going to try and lay low for now before dumping them back on the market as originals.

                        Must say, it is a quite the diverse collection of fakes. Badges, cufftitles, caps, helmets, etc, etc. "A fool and his money are soon parted" comes to mind. Unfortunately this is rather common.

                        I doubt the family (at this point...sad to say) and auction company will be surprised by the outcome. Each item has the comment;

                        "This auction comprises a private European collection of WW2 German militaria, mostly consisting of cloth headdress and steel helmets. We have been requested by the estate of the collector to offer all lots at a start price of £100, all items are sold on a "sold as viewed basis and are not subject to return". All items offered in this auction are not covered by our usual guarantee of authenticity of items from this period in history. We ask that all interested bidders, study photographs provided or ask for any others they require, these requests must be made at least 24 hours prior to the auction. All bidders must satisfy themselves with what they are bidding on and buying. Many of the items in this collection, if not original, may have been produced using original parts. Buyers must satisfy themselves with what is original and what is not."

                          Hope the collector enjoyed what he had , now it's down to the family to recoup some of the collectors investment. Surely there must be something real in there but I found it hard to spot Some wa##er made a lot of money fleecing this poor mark

                              Sounds like a total scam from start to finish to me.....The guy probably isn't dead and anyone who has that much 'stuff' must have learnt what is good and what isn't over time.....How could you not.....??
                              Whoever is involved in this just thinks it's time to make a few quid.....
                              Am I cynical...? Bloody right i am......
