Buckle ss Rodo, opinions please

Aa stated before, buckle is original. Unfortunately some idiot cleaned it to hell and back. Maybe polishing or sandpaper is used, by the look of it. What a waste of a great buckle...

As I said on my initial post this buckle was found in a farm in France I agree that the buckle was cleaned and not using the best method still it retains some original paint on the front and most of the paint on the back which is great And in my opinion it’s got a great look worn and character also the smell of it is old but on the other hand not everyone Has the knowledge and do not have appreciation for items like this one so to them is just the buckle from the war and that’s it having said that I do not blame them nor I will call them idiots last but not least considering these buckles are now being sold for well over €600 I am very very happy that I got it at the price I paid very very cheap regards

A lot of RoDo buckles have been found with the front paint removed - I would even say 90% and more are without paint on the front.
And I read (and heard) a lot of times from old collectors that it is the soldiers themself who removed the paint because they wanted to have a shiny buckle to look like the other SS buckles. Same with M43 fieldbluses with aan added dark green collar.
Shiny buckles meant "veteran" in their mind.
I don't know of it's true or if it's a story to sell but it's a fact that most of these RoDo have been cleaned on their front.

These buckles have their paint on the back and it's impossible that the wear/use removed the paint all over the front. So they have been intentionally cleaned, IMO

I could not agree more With what you are saying it makes total sense What’s the point of just getting rid of nice original paint I can only see A soldier doing that for the reasons you have statedIn the case of my buckle now I can see a clear picture based on what you just explained I don’t see the owner of a typical French farm taking the time to clean using whatever means a buckle nor a soldier being too concerned about the result of cleaning his buckle and take it to a professional to do it for him using the most advanced cleaning techniques

It is what it is and just this. Do you really think a soldier at the front line would like to be shot in the next 5 minutes because his buckle was reflecting sun?? By 44 with the Russian facing you, time for parade was long time gone!

The two reasons why most of the paint is gone from the front is because 1) RODO buckles were not primed to begin with, so the paint was not attaching to the buckle as the silver paint was. Then quality of the paint in 1944/45 was of lesser quality, much lesser quality than before 1943 2) Green buckles were only for Waffen SS, not Allgemeine. So, if the Allgemeine was staying home, the Waffen SS was fighting front line. You have more chances to have a lot of your car's paint gone if you are doing 4X4 driving in the mountains rather than driving on highway!

Very glad to hearing about your comments well it is clear now the reason why most of these Buckles lost the paint in the majority of the cases definitely a great thread this is how it goes history went this way bad quality paint for obvious reasons But on the other hand following your statement they definitely saw some action so I prefer to have one with most of the paint gone rather than a mint one with all the paint, that is my opinion

True that. Mine didnt see any battle i agree. I do feel the charm of worn buckles as u say.
