    D J with eccentric rune

Two quite different period DJ buckles, however with the common feature of the Sig Rune having different length "legs".

    Regards,

    David

Very nice variants there. Interesting that the manufacturer would make such an oddly proportioned rune. In the early days anything was OK, it seems. Regulations were probably looser than ... something very loose indeed.
I think I mentioned this before but I have a small-size DJ buckle with stamped acute rune that is all brass. Any significance to the all-brass manufacture?
            Cheers,
            Kevin

              Kevin,

The 1934 regs specified the DJ buckle to be stamped from brass. The buckle was then to be nickel-plated, with the exception of the rune. Possibly, the nickle plating on yours has worn off or been polished off?

              Regards,

              Karl

                Hello Karl,
My mini DJ is in very good condition with no trace at all of any plating or anything -- complete virgin brass. I think there is a picture of it on an earlier thread about mini buckles. I will have a look,
                Cheers,
                Kevin

                  Hi Kevin,

On second thoughts, I wouldn't be surprised if your buckle started out its life in the exact same condition you have it now. David shows totally silver-coloured ones in this thread, there are the well-known black with silver rune ones, and David has a particularly juicy one which is silver with a black rune. Although the S-rune was of course also used by some Pfadfinder groups and possibly many of the assymetrical runes should more properly be attributed to those. Fascinating stuff!

                  Regards,

                  Karl
