    SS officer buckle STEEL!

I seem to be having a good week on buckles currently- 2 SS officer examples obtained and this one I think is a unique survivor!

Front and back of buckle are 100% steel and react strongly to a magnet, well used but still nice condition. The keeper has been replaced, looks like probably period done as the prongs have been bent and shortened. The edge of the buckle that would have rested against the opposing keeper is completely worn away.

Check out the mark- looks to be double struck RZM maybe on top of a makers code?

As I understand there are only 3 or 4 of these known worldwide and only 1 of them is marked. I compared it to the example shown in this old thread and it appears to be from the same die-

Not a buckle I would love in my collection, but an interesting piece for study purpose.

Here's the same repro before reworking.

Referring to Patrick's specimen, more likely someone struck another RZM marking in double circle over former repro marking (in one circle).

Thanks for the image, that isn't from the same die- please compare the head of the eagle- totally different

Do you believe all steel ones are fake or some genuine ones? This is the one that Marc Verstraete owned which to my eye is the same with the exception of the RZM mark.

Note also the striations on the reverse fold is the same and different that that found on nickle silver examples...

I've never checked in hands an officer's by steel with provenance, on the other end I've no reasons to do not believe in Marc's words, when he say they exist.

The buckle you posted and formerly belonged to Marc remained unsold for a while on Guild's site and was unsuccessfully offered by e-stand few months ago, so many doubts are still in collectors opinion.

About yours I've no doubt it's a well known repro :

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...7&postcount=23

If you pay attention to edited areas you see difference with yours :

                    1) different catch shape

                    2) sleeve differently sized (shorter) and differently folded.
