    Brass over copper SA?

An SA that I originally thought was an unusual fake, although on closer scrutiny, a change of mind.

A somewhat unremarkable eagle design (quite boring really) with the sunwheel swastika, although a copper effect showing through on the points of wear.

Very small ears to the box and also, slightly unusual curved claws with flat tips and also, brazed to the non seamed post shroud.

    Any comments would be welcome.

    Regards,

    David

Strange buckle David! But I don't believe it is copper buckle with brass. The surface looks a little bit "attacked", maybe the buckle spend a few years on a wet attic?
I think it is a brass buckle. The copper came to the surface because of a chemical reaction.

I would be very surprised if the buckle was brass on copper.

The "colour" coming through however was quite strange.

If the buckle was a copper base, it would have shown through on the worn oak leaves.

            David

David...I had a different SA buckle, I think it had a common rotated swastica that had the EXACT same prong and shroud set up...unfortunately I think I traded or sold it this last year..nice and interesting buckle though..I am looking forward to the insight others might bring to the table on this discussion...chad

                Hello David.

You can see similar buckles at Weitze site. There are some buckles with similar condition with poor eagle design (curved claws etc.) and poor buckle design as a whole.

BUT!! You are right - small ears and roughly splay at the end of both tips of a П-clasp - it guards!

I think that the eagle design and detail is quite acceptable compared to some of the SA's that I have and overall not poor, although other features of the buckle are more interesting.

The claw arrangement is curved and which is unusual, together with the very small ears on the box.

As with the other SA that I posted with this one, the photo quality here is grim and does not show the details in full.

Will post some fresh images over the next few days.

                  Regards,

                  David

David, your buckle has been cleaned with acid or was found in a very acid soil. This explains the “red” copper under the yellow. I have experienced these reactions in my metal detector times. I would vote for the Acid cleaning as the buckle is too nice (complete catch) to have been dug up.

                      That theory does make sense.

I have seen and actually bought heavilly acid cleaned buckles and which usually, have an orange/copper look to them. This one however has probably had a lighter and more careful application of acid due to good eagle detail remaining.

Confident however that the pin, shroud and claws are original to the buckle and not affixed, post acid bath (claw rest mark on the box reverse).

Yet again, the photographs are dreadful and I will rattle of some better images over the weekend.

                      Regards,

                      David
