Same opinion : by the pics the buckle appears a cast repro.

If anyone could pm me and point out which features I have overlooked at least I will have learned something! Much appreciated.

I think this one could be original. There appears to be some casting flaws, but it looks to have been painted at some point, so it could be a false alarm. I would return it anyway, though. It's better to have one that you can feel 100% confident about.

                  Hi Belten,

I do not quite follow. Are you saying there may not be casting flaws but only in appearance due to it having been painted? If so, can I have some more opinions on this theory. Thanks.

                  Cheers, W

I would not dismiss this one too fast. I like the wear on the markings and especially on the broken part of the catch. This is clearly old damage. The markings positively compare with the markings of a woodwork found piece (picture). Yes, markings can be copied, but it's the wear which is usually hard to fake.

For the exact same reason (and much more) I think the buckle has no chance.

Btw, that marking position is protected by belt and you can verify it by observing well worn specimens with marking still crisp.

On the other end marking not crisp is one give away sign of a cast repro....along with other.

May you please show obverse and reverse pics of your supposed "woodwork piece" ?

The buckle I refer to can be found on the SS Belt Buckle Archive on the War Booty site of John T. There the piece is referred to as a woodwork find. No B633.

I think it could possibly be from the paint, but I would still return it if it were me, unless it was very cheap. Whether or not something is a cast fake often comes down to personal opinion, and I personally wouldn't want anything controversial.
