    Has this buckle been finally IDed?

    It used to be called a Penal Bn. buckle, but then I heard it wasn't. Some said fake (a term I hate......doesn't tell one much at all), and some said post war........but what?

    I had several that I got from a vet many years ago......only kept this one, and one I wore with jeans on a german belt.

    thats devinitifly not a fake .

    It's died from war material but post war worn .

    Photos with this buckles in worn are known by fireprotectors .

        Funny , I ran into one today fpr the 1st time, was with some good period RAD and Heer buckles. I left the brain buckle , but the whole penal BTL and campfire stories were new to me. I always was told for years they were fire protection. i kind of want to go back and buy it because it is neat, at least to me.its one of the 43 mmd ones.

          These buckles are undoubtedly original, but what exactly they were meant for is unknown. We know they were used shortly postwar by Feuerwehr and maybe others, but when they were made is unknown. Conventional wisdom states that they were neutral buckles made shortly after the war using wartime dies, but again, that isn't known for certain.

              Not really. No Heer buckles made by Berg & Nolte are dated after 1943, which suggests that they kept that date on their buckles until war's end. If the buckles were made shortly postwar, it would make sense for them to bear the date of 1943.

              What is beyond doubt is that the buckles were made by Berg & Nolte, and the marks are original to the buckles and not added later. Both the mark and the construction are characteristic of Berg & Nolte's wartime production. I looked at one of these in hand, and everything is correct, right down to the cut of the prongs.
