Another SS officer's fake buckle

    Another SS officer's fake buckle

    I am hoping that the many SS experts on this forum will be able to identify what has to be an SS officers fake buckle which I have just acquired. It was bought very cheaply and so there will be no disappointments - I would just like to know when/where it was likely to have been made.

    The buckle is a two piece in aluminium and is 50mm diameter. The clasp is stamped (not raised lettering) RZM in circle with M4/91 WBuS . SS runes are within a diamond and the whole lot is contained in a circle.

    I know that M4/91s are available from various dealers as repros but the quality of them is poor. This one is different because the workmanship is very fine. Fake or not, it is a well made item with everything very sharp and detailed.

    It is attached to a leather belt with indistinct markings which could be 10/57. Buckle prongs are pointed.

    So, what do I have? An old English or an Indian made or something from Eastern Europe?

    Any comments or observations will be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Forum.

    In connection with your SS leaders buckle and strap, do you have any images that may be posted?

    I only have a slight knowledge in connection with copy SS leaders buckles, although as you probably suspected, the one that you hold is a fake.

    The stamped markings are a pure fantasy, together with their placed position, although the classic warning sign is the SS runes in a diamond. This applies to any SS buckle (enlisted and leaders).

      Many thanks for your reply. I had no doubts that this was a fake but, because it is so well executed, I am curious to know its origins.
      I cannot do anything about images at present as the camera is not available.

          Hi Peter, the "SS runes in a diamond" is the trademark of Tony Oliver. Tony had these made in England well over 20 years ago now. They are indeed nicely made. Tony is still around and has a large stall at Beltring show every year, but now he deals mainly in US militaria and vehicles.

            Hi Peter, the "SS runes in a diamond" is the trademark of Tony Oliver. Tony had these made in England well over 20 years ago now. They are indeed nicely made. Tony is still around and has a large stall at Beltring show every year, but now he deals mainly in US militaria and vehicles.

            If I'm correct, Tony Oliver and the OLT fake SS buckles are one and the same? You mentioned that he deals in U.S. militaria, so now I'm wondering what type of U.S. militaria? Is he faking this also?

              Hi Gary, yes, it is the same chap. The stuff he sells today is mainly US Sweetheart items and WAC/ ARC uniforms. He always has a good range of them. I have no reason to beleive any are dodgy. He does have a few German items on sale, nothing spectacular, I can't recall seeing any of his old wares on offer. He has the odd bit of of Soviet/DDR stuff too. I bought a Russian M36 helmet from him.

              Tony is a big WW2 vehicle collector. He has a private museum in the south of England. He opens this up to the public on occasion. He used to, and still might, provide vehicles for use in films. He provided the German vehicles used in the film "The Battle of Britain" back in the late 1960's.

                David, I had already seen the offerings on that website which were 45mm diameter. Mine is 50mm which made me assume that mine was from a different source. Hence the plea to the forum.

                It's certainly a risky area if any real money was being thrown around!!

                  My sincere apologies if I seemed a trifle patronising by reminding the Forum of this well known link - openly selling various Third Reich items and to include SS belt buckles, as fakes.

                  I have no further useful information on the buckle that you hold and hopefully, one of the chaps specialising in SS buckles, may add some comments.
