    Heer parade buckle

    Was the enlisted buckle for the dress uniform of the Wehrmacht any different than the combat versions? Specifically I am referring to Heer buckles. I've looked at buckles for a year and have seen aluminum and steel buckles but have never noticed, nor had ever read, that there were any that had a special polish or appearance for the dress uniform (waffenrock) than those used for the regular combat uniform. Is it a matter of the paint? Did the dress buckle not have paint and the combat buckle have paint. Does anyone have a picture of what would be considered a dress buckle for enlisted? The reason I am enquiring is that I have an enlisted cavalry Waffenrock and cap and am trying to complete the set with the appropriate belt and buckle. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Richard, if you are wishing to complete a walking out uniform, you would be best in finding a nice private purchase belt and buckle. The belt would be made from patent (shiney) black leather, often with a felt backing. The buckle would be of the bright, and often, pebbled alloy variety. But please bear in mind I am not a hard core buckle collector So please wait for some of the buckle guys to chip in.

    A painted steel buckle would be more correctly worn with the field service uniform I think?

      Adrian is right, what you want is patent leather belt with a shiny aluminium buckle (usually, these have the roundel attached with four tabs). The alu 'combat' (duty) version has field grey paint. Field grey steel buckles were introduced in 1940 and do not belong on a walking-out uniform.

        You may find this interesting. I have the private purchase buckle with the original patent leather belt. Some of the leather finish has bonded to the buckle on the back. It is however showing much of the remaining green paint. All the others I have run across were polished silver looking. That's why I kept it.

            I think that the other chaps have now said it all, however be careful.

            The two piece and private purchase Army buckle is now faked.

              Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone know how much I can expect to pay for a buckle/belt set like this and how easy they are too find?

                The buckles are common, it is the patent leather belt you might have to look a bit for. I would say $80-90 for them.

                Most original buckles will show wear/scratches at the catch from the belt hook. Many fakes can be caught by the lack of pebbling on the side of the buckle and poor detail and flatness on the eagle. I am sure there are good fakes out there now too.
