    Belten..OK, Now I am confused..

    Bill says, Buckle measures 46.75mm at the rivet, 60.99mm long and it weighs 17 grams.

    So it sounds like 46.75 WIDE 60.99 LONG. According to Bill

    Belton says Originals should be about 64mm in width.

    Something here doesn't compute.

    Can anyone clarify any of this?

    Also any comments on WEIGHT?

      I think it's just a difference of terminology. When I said 'width,' I was referring to the horizontal width. Here's a genuine buckle formerly from my collection which I've marked to explain the width.

          We can talk about width and length, but when the width is greater than the length then which are which?

          With a horizontal dimension of 61mm, this buckle is definitely a cast fake.

          Reason : the fakers built a mold using an original buckle, so the mold has the same dimension as the original sample.
          Then the faker fill the mold with liquid (in fusion) aluminium.

          Then they leave it cooling down so the material retracts (about 3 %) when coming back to ambient temperature.
          As a result, the fake buckle is smaller than the mold, so smaller than the original one.

          64*0.97 = 62.08mm or less

          In this case (60.99), the retraction of the aluminim alliage was about 5%...

            Good Evening,

            I have been doing a little research and I came across a tidbit of information that may help in identifying an aluminum SS buckle as a reproduction.

            In Peter Nash's book, page 247, he mentions that the prongs on an original buckle are made from drawn aluminum wire that will show fine lines along the length of the wire. Reproductions will have prongs made from a casting showing the casting lines of each side of the prong.

            The buckle I submitted in this thread has prongs that have been casted - there is a seam on each side of each prong.

            Who would have thought...
