              Hello Folks,

It is not my intention to 'beat a dead horse' but I have a question for those of you that replied to Mathieu's submittal. I am trying to educate myself as what to look for.

On page 220 of "German Belt Buckles 1845-1945" by Peter Nash, there is a picture of a RZM 822/37 SS aluminum buckle. I purchased one like it (I used the picture as a 'guide' on what a good buckle would look like). Mr. Nash does not call out the pictured buckle as a reproduction.

You three gentlemen (Ric, Andrea and Yellow 12) have probably forgot more about SS buckles than I will ever know. My question: Is the buckle I submitted real or a repro? If it happens to be a repro can you tell me what features/lack of features that identify it as a repro? I would suggest a PM should you not want to 'publish' the answer.

Thank you very much for your time, trouble and your consideration in answering my question.

              Bill

A black & white photo of the same buckle.

Buckle measures 46.75mm at the rivet, 60.99mm long and it weighs 17 grams.

Based on those photos, it's not easy to tell. Personally, I'm leaning toward it being a cast copy, but you might get a few different opinions, because very clear photos are needed to give a really informed opinion.

The best way to tell genuine aluminum buckles from cast fakes is to study both types. Apart from that, look for casting flaws (small irregularities and bubbling on the surface of the buckle and prongs) as well as a color that doesn't match the originals.

Also, keep in mind that both the Nash and Angolia books have several errors, so they cannot be relied upon completely for good information.

                      Hello Belten,

                      Thanks for the reply.

I can easily supply additional pictures if you'll tell me what or where to photograph.

Could you take a very clear photo of the reverse with the prongs down? That might clear it up. Also, if you measure it accurately in millimeters, that could help as well; some of the fakes a bit smaller than the genuine ones.

                          Hi Belten,

Does this photo help out? Keep in mind that the buckle has a silver finish and I am taking the photo indoors with incandescent light.

Sorry; I didn't see the measurements in your earlier post. Based on those, I'd have to say that it's most likely a cast fake. Originals should be about 64mm in width.
