    Silver wash on Heer buckle?

I am posting this for a friend of mine. His steel belt buckle has a silver wash on it, and he wanted to know if it was original before he did anything to try and removeit. Thoughts?

The buckle is an original green factory painted Schmole & Co buckle, the silver paint layer can be applied on war or postwar period

Original buckle but with the rust spots on the back. I would guess someone painted it to cover the rust. There might be a way to remove the silver without removing the original finish.
