I wonder if anyone has any ideas towards the meaning of the BSt (?) stamp on the leather tongue of this buckle?

A couple of very nice, beautiful buckles! Please excuse my ignorance, but are they nickel or silver washed over brass? I've seen both types of finish described and need to have you explain the differences to me and how one can determine what finish is applied?
My guess on the B.St. stamping is that because the buckle is related to flying, might have something to do with a particular Staffel (St.)? Maybe Berlin, Brandenburg, etc..? I'm not sure if pre-war DLV/RLB squadrons had named or numbered squadrons, but that's my guess.

Thankyou for the input with regard to the leather tongue markings. What you suggest is quite feasible, although I really do not know.
The buckles you refer to would appear to be a brass base with perhaps a nickle plate, rather than a nickle silver wash. Not however solid nickle silver and I think that we can see traces of brass from the images.
A somewhat academic feature however, as I sure that the horizontal wing and downswept wing style, is seen in both plated or coated brass, together with nickle silver proper.

Great buckles there. It seems that silver paint was often applied to nickel buckles (as well as steel, aluminium and zinc), although to me the natural nickel finish is nicer than the paint that will only get worn away with use.
