    The Question to all

Hello to all. Could anybody say me what colors of paint was used for painting of steel waffen ss buckles? I have seen only silver and mouse gray colors. Have enybody seen steel ss buckles, painted by feldgrau color (the same as wehrmacht )?

    SS Buckles

    Hi Sergey,
I have seen SS combat buckles painted silver, mouse gray, almost a metallic looking gray, and buckles by RODO which are painted a dark olive color.

The metallic-looking gray was actually zinc anodizing, a more durable & rust-preventative treatment than paint.

        Hello,

I have in my collection a DARK BLEU painted RODO buckle.
This buckle is painted with the same colour paint as the so-called Navy or costal artillery W.H dark bleu RODO buckles. This affirmation is not correct in my eyes; I personally think that the dark bleu paint on those buckles is just a late war paint that the manufacture used on those buckles.

Silver painted SS Buckles are of course the most commom. Some of you already stated several variant in paint we are able to find. And keep in mind that early Nickel Silver and aluminum SS Buckles were silver painted also to prevent a too bright apparence of the raw metal. So, for who of you who are polishing such buckles to a bright glossy shine keep in mind that it never been a SS buckle worn as such !!
Painted feldgrau from factory we know some Assmann 155/40 and 155/43's (a large selection of 43's are) and of course all RODO's since felgrau was the only color used by this maker (not a single one in silver). But there were numerous other SS Buckles been issued in silver gray but later been painted feldgrau (or white) for camouflage reasons. For those later, the color is not considered as a variant, but just as a little "extra" for the buckle's price since the buckle is considered worn "only by Waffen SS". Be very care with those since especially in Russia they are very quick to add a new green paint to original rusted or silver painted SS buckles to increase their price !!
If you are looking for a feldgrau painted SS Buckle just because you believe it is the only right buckle for your display showing a W-SS soldier you are not accurate. Silver painted SS Buckles were issued to front line troops as well and even in larger quantity than the green painted ones.

            Silver Painted SS buckles

            Hi Jean,
I want to add to your comments about Waffen-SS soldiers wearing more silver painted buckles than green painted ones.

I have a good friend that served in the 10th SS, and I have looked at dozens of period photos he has supplied to me. In 90+% of the pictures the soldiers were wearing silver painted or aluminum buckles. In none of the pictures can you spot a green buckle.

This man was in the 22RGT, and it is interesting just how many SS men wore non-green buckles. Yet, I have had collectors say to me, they prefer green buckles because that is what SS troops wore most of the time-false!
            Regards,
            Jody
