    Luftwaffe Buckle

    Hi all

Here is a buckle and tab that came with a helmet I bought today. It appears to have dirt-Sawdust and old dried grease miixed on it. I can scrape it away woth my fingernail, and the finish is intact underneith. Any idea on how to clean and best preserve. Also what is the value of this buckle?

    Thanks
    Charlie

Just a light brushing with a soft tooth brush did the trick. Here are a couple of photo's..

Absolutely the way to go with this type of buckle. Perhaps even a couple shots of compressed air to blow off and loosen the detritus followed by very tender brushing with the soft tooth brush.

To clean or not to clean... Collectors have differing and potentially very potent views on this. It all comes down to the individual collector. For myself I never touch a buckle with a gilt finish, silvering or paint except very carefully in a case like your's. For bare brass and solid nickel it depends on the particular buckle. Some look great with age tone and some patina, while others might be nice to do some careful "restorative" work to where the buckle appears as it did factory fresh or period worn/polished. There are some great threads on here dealing with restorative (term I prefer) techniques that are worth checking out.

      Adam

P.S. - Nice buckle and perfect, crisp maker mark on the tab

            Charlie,

No maker's mark is nothing to worry about. The buckle was, obviously by way of the tab, made by Aurich. Aurich is also identified as the maker by this characteristic style of buckle catch.

As to value, it is really what it is worth to the individual collector. I don't really collect Luftwaffe, however I would not pay more than $125 for this buckle. If more paint were intact or mintier then maybe up to $175 but that is me. This is all very subjective and opinions will vary. There is also the economy/market to consider. With these factors, it is hard to give a more certain answer which is perhaps why some avoid addressing the issue of value in a forum thread like this. Hope that all helps.

            Best,
            Adam
